Kopi Luwak, also known as civet coffee, is a unique and controversial type of coffee that originates from Indonesia. The name "Kopi Luwak" comes from the Indonesian words "kopi" (meaning coffee) and "luwak" (referring to the Asian palm civet, also known as the luwak).

Here's how Kopi Luwak is produced:

  1. Coffee beans selection: Kopi Luwak is made from coffee beans, usually of the Arabica or Robusta variety, that are eaten and excreted by the Asian palm civet.

  2. Consumption and digestion: The Asian palm civet consumes ripe coffee cherries, and the beans pass through the animal's digestive system. During this process, enzymes in the civet's stomach interact with the beans.

  3. Collection: After the beans are excreted in the civet's feces, local farmers collect the droppings from the forest floor. They then clean and process the beans to remove the outer layers.

  4. Roasting: The cleaned beans are roasted to a medium or dark roast, similar to regular coffee beans.

Kopi Luwak gained international attention because of its rarity and the belief that the civet's digestive process adds unique flavors to the beans.
